Since about 2020, metaverses have been moving in the direction of “virtual sandboxes” where the space is made by the users.
To join the metaverse, you usually need to pass verification and have a browser-based crypto wallet. In the years to come, the metaverses will only become more important. McKinsey says that by 2030, the metaverse market will be worth $5 trillion.
Top 5 Metaverses to Catch Your Eye
Axie Infinity
The Play-to-Earn model is at the heart of Axie Infinity, which is a blockchain game metaverse. The Vietnamese studio Sky Mavis started the project in 2017. Axie Infinity is now available for Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android devices, as well as PCs. In Russia, the only way to play is through a VPN. The metaverse is powered by a sidechain of Ethereum called Ronin.
At the heart of the game Axie Infinity are characters named Axie that are completely owned by their owner through NFT. You can buy them, raise them, put them in battle with each other, and give them a life by buying land and other things. With the help of special “amulets,” Axie’s skills can be improved (Charm).
Decentraland
Decentraland is a big project where people can trade land plots and build different things on them. Ari Meilich and Esteban Ordano, both from Argentina, started the Decentraland Metaverse on the Ethereum blockchain. For now, you can only use it in your browser. There is a demo version that works even if it isn’t in sync with the cryptocurrency wallet. After you connect, you’ll see a window for your avatar, which you can change to look like you and keep moving around the metaverse. In Decentraland, there is a lot to do. Avatars can go to NFT trade shows, races, parties, and hang out in casinos. They can also grow their own dragons from eggs.
My Neighbor Alice
Antler Interactive started the My Neighbor Alice metaverse. “Animal Crossing in the blockchain world” is the name of the project. Users can make their own islands and build different kinds of buildings on them. They can also talk to and interact with their neighbors, harvest crops, and complete missions and competitions to earn cryptocurrency. The project should be up on Steam soon.
The story says that Alice lives in the town where the user will have to start over. In general, everything is in the best Happy Farmer tradition, where the user can choose a craft that he likes, like raising bees, fish, or farming on his site.
ALICE is the most important thing in the metaverse. You can buy and sell pets, breed and trade them, help other players with tasks, export resources, grow crops, and rent land.
Highrise
The metaverse, which is more like a social network, is powered by Ethereum and Highrise Blockchain, an Avalanche subnet. The Pocket Worlds studio is in charge of making the project.
In Highrise, you can buy NFT land, build buildings on it, and make rooms in them. You can also plan events and make games, chat with other people, and meet new ones. Character customization is a separate part of the game. Players can give their characters different looks and buy clothes for them in the app marketplace. All of the things that users make become NFT. On the internal market, they can be sold.
Highrise is based on a map of territories, which is made up of more than 160,000 pieces of land called “parcels.” The land is tied to NFT, and you can buy it for as little as 0.165 ETH, even on the OpenSea market place. Districts and towns are made up of pieces of land.
You can also make money from the land by renting out rooms and plots, charging to play on them, or just charging people to come to your territories.
Sandbox
Pixowl started up the Metaverse. Like Decentraland, Sandbox is a multiplayer sandbox that is based on Ethereum and lets everyone build their own world with puzzles, tasks, stories, and rules. In the metaverse, users can make their own games and meet up in different territories.
Digital land parcels in the form of NFTs are the main resource of the Sandbox. These are needed to make a custom world. Gucci bought the Sandbox lots, the Dubai cryptocurrency regulator opened an office in the metaverse, and the project just announced a partnership with Renault Korea Motors.
